'Victim As Birdwatcher' by Edward Boyd |

Private detective and Humphrey Bogart fanatic Phil Scrotty is contacted by Sir Wilfred Templar, whose godson, ornithologist Christopher Vaughan, has recently disappeared. Accepting the case, Scrotty contacts Kronk in the Ministry of Defence’s Department K, who in turn assigns Inspector Blood and Sergeant Hound to track down the missing birdwatcher. Meanwhile, the kidnapped Vaughan finds himself imprisoned by the beautiful but villainous Syrie Van Epp and her henchman, Weedy; Vaughn holds the casting vote share in the Templar Cosmetic Company, and Syrie will stop at nothing to get her hands on it in her plan to take over the firm and gain control of its most valuable product: a special scent that turns people into imbeciles for twenty-four hours. While Syrie uses blackmail, seduction and even marriage to obtain what she wants from her prisoner, Sir Wilfred is betrayed by Scrotty, handed over to Weedi and taken to where Vaughn is being held; however, instead of helping his godson, Sir Wilfred reveals that he too has plans for the manipulative fragrance, seeing it as a way of making England great once more. Meanwhile, Kronk decides to secure the scent for the good of the nation – and in a bid to tidy up the loose ends, he gives the order to have Scrotty killed…
